If I rest, my back pain will get better, right?.... Wrong!
Your back requires active exercise to recover…
The Multifidus is a deep muscle in your lower back. This thin but very important muscle group attaches to every vertebrae giving your spine stiffness and stability. In addition, Multifidus takes pressure off your discs and helps keep the spine straight.
Weakness of this muscle can occur from pain- the muscle is inhibited from action, a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture and injury.
It is also the only muscle currently known to not strengthen/get better by itself- it requires active rehabilitation.
So what can you do? Go see your physical therapist! Through a thorough examination, this muscle may just be part of the reason for your low back pain. Exercises and education will be prescribed specifically for you to help return you to a healthy and painfree lifestyle.
