In 2014 California approved Direct Access for physical therapy. As of now, all 50 states have some form of direct access.
What is direct access?
Direct Access allows an injured person to seek help from a physical therapist without needing a referral from a doctor.
What does California’s direct access allow?
California allows 12 visits over a period of 45 calendar days (whichever comes first). After that time you will need a referral from and MD, DO, or DPM in order to continue physical therapy treatment.
What’s the benefit of starting PT early?
The earlier you can see your physical therapist, the better. By delaying treatment, you end up with more scar tissue build up, stiffness in the muscles and joints, and compensations.
Will insurance pay for direct access?
Many, but not all, insurances will pay for direct access. Ask your insurance if they cover “Direct Access for Physical Therapy” or if you need a referral for physical therapy.
