FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SYSTEMS- What it means
I recently took a course named FMS or Functional Movement Systems as a means to enhance my skills as a Physical Therapist. The system brings new ideas and tests to assist PT s in the evaluation and ultimately the treatment process.
FMS is a series of tests and observations designed to identify dysfunctional movement patterns in the individual. Such tests then assist the Healthcare or Fitness practitioner to design a program, typically
exercises to correct poor patterns and improve the individual’s workout or everyday activities.
By identifying the patterns early, the risk of perpetuating poor movements is reduced.
As a Physical Therapist, use of this system provides a more detailed view of the individual’s movements and patterns which may arise due to pain, limited mobility or weakness. When added to the evaluation
process, the therapist can then provide the patient with a more thorough assessment and ultimately treatment including exercises, patient education and return to wellness.
I have used the system with several patients and have found it to be a useful tool in my toolbox as a therapist. Results have been good and I look forward to utilizing FMS and the next course in the series, Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), which has even greater application in rehabilitation.
