I've Heard Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - But What Is It?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome effects about 3-6% of the population. It is caused by pressure on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway on the palm side of your hand. In addition to the median nerve, 9 tendons also pass through the carpal tunnel.
When the median nerve is compressed, the symptoms can include numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and arm. In the picture above, the blue areas highlight the areas of pain/ tingling/ numbness.
If you are experiencing any tingling or numbness in the hand or wrist, you should seek out a medical or physical therapy assessment. Not all symptoms are from the carpal tunnel.
