What Is Sciatica?
We have all heard of someone, perhaps even ourselves, the the diagnosis of sciatica. BUT WHAT IS IT?!?!
Sciatica refers to the irritation and inflammation of the sciatic nerve- the large nerve which originates in the low back and sacrum, and runs through the buttock and back of the thigh.
Causes of sciatica are numerous but the most common causes are lumbar herniated disc, bony spurs pressing on the nerve in your back, narrowing of the spinal canal, and pelvic dysfunction. Less common causes are tumors or a systemic disease such as diabetes.
Typical symptoms of sciatica include burning, pain, and tingling along the buttock and down the back of the leg. The low back will often respond with muscle tightening, guarding, and pain. If left undiagnosed and untreated, the symptoms could worsen- numbness and weakness of the leg, as well as severe pain.
Physical therapy should be initiated as soon as possible. Your physical therapist can educate you on proper care and management of your symptoms. And give you exercises to address weakness, tightness, and stiffness, return you to health and wellness!
